NYC Weekly Show Highlights: 01/29 - 02/03

Maybe I'm the only one, but I feel like this winter is breezing by quickly. Don't get me wrong, the weather has been rough, but I appreciate how much has been going on and the near-constant sunshine so I don't feel like my truest CHUD form, which usually pays me a visit this time of year. We're almost in the throes of February (FeBREWary?) and there is no shortage of high-voltage rock 'n' roll to choose from. Read on...

Monday, 01/29/18: Gnarcissists, World's Greatest Detective, Latin Punk Jazz, Fang Gang at Saint Vitus

WGD are a live force akin to a flaming bag of poo. I won't elaborate because I think Alex will appreciate that and this is for him. I have seen exactly none of these other bands before, but sometimes you need to dive in to a raging punk pool of ooze and trust your instincts that with names like Latin Punk Jazz, Gnarcissists and Fang Gang that you can't go wrong.

Tuesday, 01/30/18: Kino Kimino, No Honeymoon, Low Anxiety at Elsewhere (Zone One)

Perennial BS&B faves No Honeymoon play a huge-sounding room with supergroup Kino Kimino and dancing-frontman-on-a-mission-to-get-you-dancing Low Anxiety for a heaping pile of shit that'll blow your ears out if you're standing too close. Which is honestly what we like best.

Wednesday, 01/31/18: Evil Jesus Band, God Tiny, Flying Dead at Elsewhere (Zone One)

Now I'm not one for booking a show based on consistency of band names, but this looks purposeful to me. I bet this could be considered a religious experience to certain parts of society (the 04/20 crowd, if you catch my drift) so if you're looking for a red-eyed pick-me-up, these riff masters have your number.

Thursday, 02/01/18: Thick, No Ice, The Night Screams, Shelter Dogs at Our Wicked Lady

Maaaaan (pun unavoidable)! Thursday has a lot of great shows. I'm even playing one and it ain't this one (bums me out). This one takes the cake as it's our forever homie Jon Mann's birthday and he's ringing it in by playing a stacked show filled with scene stalwarts ready to jump around with you and it's all for a good cause as the proceeds + 10% of the bar go to charity.

Friday, 02/02/18: Leg Days, El Silver Cabs, Lumps, Nihiloceros at Alphaville

It's a sad day when a great band shuffles off this mortal coil, as Leg Days is. If you haven't had a chance to catch them do it this Friday night. They're a glorious chicken-'n'-waffles combo—sweet and savory with oozing pop hooks and gnarly guitar rock—all the good stuff. Supported by a cadre of blazing hot bands, top to bottom.

Saturday, 02/03/18 - Des Demonas, The Othermen, The Whips at Brooklyn Bazaar

It must be noted that The Othermen have been cranking out beer-soaked classics for nearly a decade and if that doesn't deserve a coveted spot on such a distinguished list as this, I don't know what does. The Whips are hopping up from Philly and Des Demonas from DC for a night of good ole fashioned garage rock that'll remind you of those sweaty Otto's back room shows of yore.

Some good friends relayed some tasty info to me the other day—there is a handy site that gives a nice list of all the band goings on that isn't Ohmyrockness. Check out http://www.nycdiy.xyz/ in case you wanna break out!

Greg Hanson lives in Brooklyn and plays in a bunch of bands, founded King Pizza Records, and goes to a bunch of shows. This might qualify him to write about these shows for Blood, Sweat, and Beers.
